Float Away Totoro

Week: 2/13-2/24

Progress                                                                                             Finished

This painting is based on a movie called "My Neighbor Totoro" by Studio Ghibli. An animated movie about two girls who move to the country and find a forest spirit in their backyard. Here, painted those spirits floating through the sky with an umbrella given to the sprite by one of the girls. I mixed colors together to get the correct shading value I wanted. I tried hardest with this technique on the trees to make them appear bushy. I am very happy with how the trees turned out and I think they're my strong suit in this piece. I did use reference photos to make sure I drew and painted the characters accordingly. Overall, I am satisfied with this piece. I could improve on the clouds, they turned out a bit rough.

Golden Rays of Sunshine

Week: 2/26-3/10

Finished

These black and white trees I painted were inspired by a tutorial by Bob Ross. In the tutorial, he used an oil base, I used acrylic. I chose to do black and white instead of in color (like the tutorial) because I like the depth/light effect given. The acrylic gave it a rough texture look compared to Ross's which is very smooth looking. The end result of the painting shows a forest surrounded by bushes, a path going through the forest and the sunlight shining through the bare trees. I dislike the big tree I put up front, I wish I shaped it differently. I could improve on shaping the braches for the trees, some are very oddly shaped and don't bland in naturally.

The Lone Wolf

Week: 3/13-3/17

Finished
This is my donation piece for an art gallery my school had. It portrays a lone wolf sitting on a mountain top, howling at a full moon. I used the same painting style as the black and white trees I painted the other week. However, this one has more blending in the colors. There Is no real meaning behind this painting. I painted it to test out the silhouette/black & white style. I could improve in the shape of the wolf, it's much too cartoony here, I wanted a more realistic shape. I could also improve on the moon craters, they seem very blotchy. I would say my strong points are the trees, and the shape of the mountain and moon.

Mountains That Move - Artist Inspired

Week: 4/10-present

This piece was inspired by the famous painter, Bob Ross. I chose Bob Ross because he uses the simplest of techniques and creates the most complex paintings that anyone can recreate. His landscapes are eye-catching.
I did a painting of mountains over a lake and there's a forest surrounding the lake and mountains. The most difficult part was createing the water reflections because its something I've never done. Many of Bob Ross paintings include mountain tops and lakes which is what inspired me to do a piece containing those elements. My strong suit would be the land details.
About Bob Ross:
Ross was born in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1942 and raised in Orlando, Florida. Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force at 18 years old and served as a medical records technician and became a sergeant later on. Afterwards he became the creator and host of the television show "The joy of painting". He had a very soft voice and was a magnificent painting instructor. In his show, he would instruct viewers in painting techniques and tools. One of his sons was also an impressive painter and appeared on his show occasionally.
Ross used the wet-on-wet oil painting technique, in which the painter continues adding paint on top of still-wet paint rather than waiting a lengthy amount of time to allow each layer of paint to dry.
